Congrats to the more than 100 seventh and eighth grade student musicians from the North Penn, Pennridge, Souderton, and Quakertown School Districts who were selected this year to participate in the Bux-Mont Intermediate Honors Band. Now in its 26th year, the band performs each January for the community at a festival which includes outstanding student musicians from the 10 middle schools served by the group.
Founded in 1992, Alan Malachowski, an instrumental music teacher in the North Penn School District, approached his colleagues in his home and three other neighboring school districts with the idea of forming a select ensemble for middle and junior high school students. Their enthusiastic endorsement led to the creation of the band with the middle and junior high directors selecting their finest student musicians. Since its inception, more than 2,000 seventh and eighth grade musicians and 30 directors have had the opportunity to interact and acquaint themselves with other musicians and directors from the surrounding school districts.
With the funds accrued through donations, the band has been able to commission five pieces written for and premiered by the band. These pieces include “Blazing Fury,” by David Shaffer, “Pride of the Bux-Mont,” by David Holsinger, “The Legend of Duffy’s Cut,” by Robert Sheldon, “Penn’s Woods,” by Robert Jager, and “Congolese,” by William Owens.
Let’s hear it too for all the teachers whose hard work and dedication make this all possible!
