Design is not commonly taught in middle schools, but the students of Perkiomen Valley Middle School are being noticed for transforming their school cafeteria for the annual Poetry Café. Perkiomen Valley Middle School Poetry Guerillas and the Special Design Squad were awarded with second place in the national Industrial Designers Society of America contest. More than 25 students worked together to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for the event in the school’s lunch room. The students learned the importance of asking questions such as, “Why are things the way they are?” and “How can we improve them?" The evening’s theme was “The Poetry of Small Things” and attendees were asked to bring small items for inspiration during the writing activities at the event.
