Teacher Tuesday: November 29, 2017
Sue McDonald of Rolling Hills Elementary in Council Rock School District is this week’s inspiring #TeacherTuesday. A gifted support teacher for students in grades two through six, she draws on her childhood experience as she approaches her students.
Her parents divorced when she was a young elementary student and the necessity of her mother earning a living to support three children meant that “she wasn’t able to read to me or help me with my homework.” Sue’s grades suffered, and school became a source of anxiety.
“I decided to become a teacher to help young children like myself,” says Sue. “Each day, I remember to look carefully at ‘the whole child.’ Each child comes to school with their whole life’s experience. These experiences often enhance learning, but sometimes, they’re a hindrance.”
“I’m an advocate for my students on good days, but especially on their off days,” explains Sue. “One special caring adult can make all the difference in a child’s life. I’m happy to be that adult for my students!”
