“Music in Our Schools Month” Virtual Choir Celebrates Bucks and Montgomery Public School Music Programs
32 Student Musicians Featured in Virtual Choir
(MONTGOMERYVILLE, PA) –Vocalists from 10 public high schools in Bucks and Montgomery County, along with a student pianist, have united to create a choral piece from the newly-created Justice Choir Songbook in celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, which is observed each March.
The piece, “We Walk in Love” by Deanna Witkowski and Lemuel Colon, begins with the text, “We walk in love united in purpose. We join our hands and lift up one voice.” And together, these 32 musicians have virtually “united in purpose.” The multi-district choir piece debuted on Wednesday, March 31 at 7:00 P.M. on the Facebook Page of the Council for the Advancement of Public Schools (PSEA-CAPS), a project of PSEA’s Mideastern Region which promotes the success of public schools in Bucks and Montgomery Counties.
“Our teachers have been working to help our students express themselves over the past year, despite the challenges the pandemic presented to our communities,” said Bill Senavaitis, President of PSEA’s Mideastern Region. “We are so proud of our talented students in Bucks and Montgomery Counties and thrilled to be able to coordinate this opportunity to highlight their abilities.”
Alan Malachowski, a middle school music teacher from the North Penn School District, helped organize the effort, along with the choir directors from the 10 public high schools. North Penn High School Choir Director Matt Klenk created rehearsal materials for the students, and recorded practice tracks for each voice part, with the assistance of fellow North Penn music teacher Jenny Klenk, who happens to be his spouse.
“As the pandemic forced our educators to adapt their instruction, our PSEA Mideastern Region CAPS program also has pivoted to new ways of celebrating our students,” says Malachowski, who is also President-Elect of PSEA’s Mideastern Region. “The outstanding music programs in our Bucks and Montgomery County schools continue to find new ways to lift every voice and sing together, even while we are apart.”
