Teacher Tuesday: February 21, 2017
This week’s #TeacherTuesday salutes the very original Steven Savitz, whose students are getting a real charge out of their involvement in the Electric Car Club, which he sponsors after school. A teacher of eleventh and twelfth grade AP Environmental Science in the Methacton High School, the club had the unique honor of displaying its vehicles recently at the Philadelphia Auto Show.
This innovative educator introduced the Electric Car Club to the high school in 2002. Says Steve, “Presently, we maintain two street legal electric vehicles and a recently converted box-truck, which runs on 100 percent recycled vegetable oil. It is not only a mobile charging station for the electric vehicles, but has also been transformed into an alternative energy classroom.”
What’s the value of learning about these innovative technologies? “Every week, these. students have the opportunity to create, design and explore their ideas about alternative energy from the classroom to the vehicles in the garage.” No wonder the club has won first prize in an annual competition for alternatively powered cars in seven of the past 13 years!
